The EU has added Georgia to the list of countries for which it will gradually open borders
The Council of the European Union added Georgia to the list of 15 countries for which the phased opening of borders will begin on July 1. A special message in connection with this decision was published on the website of the EU Council on June 30 in the evening. The Council today adopted a recommendation to phase out temporary restrictions on non-essential travel to the EU. Travel restrictions should be lifted for countries listed in the recommendation, and this list is revised and, as appropriate, updated every two weeks, the report said. Together with Georgia, this list also includes Algeria, Australia, Canada, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand and a number of other countries safe from the spread of coronavirus, in which the number of new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants over the past 14 days is close or below the EU average. In Georgia, as of July 1, 931 cases of coronavirus are recorded, including 3 cases have been confirmed over the past day. Despite such positive dynamics, the Georgian government last week extended restrictions on international communication until July 31. But, as the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Economy noted after the meeting of the interdepartmental coordinating council to combat coronavirus on June 30, this decision may be revised depending on what decision the European Union makes to open borders.
