Thailand will purchase two non-nuclear class submarines from China S26T

The subcommittee of public procurement of the Thai parliament approved the allocation of $713 million for the purchase of two S26T class diesel-electric submarines (Thailand) in China for the country's Navy, Bangkok Post reported on August 25. The publication notes that parliamentarians had a heated debate, defending the direction of this money not to strengthen the Navy, but to overcome the damage caused to the economy by the coronavirus pandemic. At the moment, Thailand and China have entered into an agreement for the purchase of one submarine, which the Twiland Navy should receive in 2024. The cutting of steel for the construction of the first submarine began in China in September 2018, the keel laying ceremony took place at the Wuchang Shipbuilding shipyard in Wuhan on September 5, 2019. It is worth noting that the Thai Navy currently does not have a single submarine. Chinese Yuan class submarines (Type-041) were chosen for reasons of their minimum cost compared to other options proposed by China, Russia, Germany, South Korea and Sweden.
