Ryabkov: Whelan is not in prisoner exchange schemes
Foreign citizen Paul Whelan, who was convicted of espionage in Russia, does not appear on the lists of persons whom the Russian Federation and the United States can exchange. This was announced on June 16 by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov. The diplomat was asked whether Whelan could be exchanged for Russian citizens in US prisons. Whelan's name is not discussed in such exchange schemes, Ryabkov replied. According to the news agency, earlier the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, noted that the mechanisms for exchanging prisoners are involved by the parties, if there is a desire for this. Whelan on June 15 was sentenced by a Russian court to 16 years in prison for espionage. He pleads not guilty.
