Burkina Faso security crisis affects gold mining - expert
In 2019, gold production in Burkina Faso was most likely to decline due to security concerns and attacks on industrial miners. This is reported by Reuters news agency with reference to the statement of the Minister of Mining of Burkina Faso Idani Umaru. In an interview with Reuters on the sidelines of the Mining Indaba conference in Cape Town, he said gold production in the West African country is expected to be 50 tons in 2019 due to security concerns, up from 53 tons in 2018. The exact data will be published later, he added. According to reporters, Burkina Faso is currently fighting a growing Islamist insurgency that has killed about 1,000 people since 2016, and nearly 500,000 residents have been forced to flee their homes. During this time, several dozen attacks were carried out on industrial and small mines. We remind that in Burkina Faso there are gold mining companies such as Endeavor Mining, Teranga Gold, Roxgold and IAMGOLD.
